“Another horror movie”: The simple thing Australia needs to change to avoid second Test loss

SEN broadcaster Matt White believes Australia will stick with the same team and must go back to basics if they are to defeat India in the second Test.

The Australians were embarrassed by India in the first Test in Perth, losing by 295 runs after two batting capitulations.

Speculation has been rife since with calls for players to be dropped and preparations to be overhauled to stop India going 2-0 up in their hunt for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Matt White believes the only way Australia can win the second Test in Adelaide is to focus on the basics of their footwork at training.

“We can speculate on all sorts of things, but speculation won’t provide clear answers, and I’ll tell you what it won’t provide - runs,” White said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“If one thing needs changing it is footwork. It was terrible in Perth, non-existent in cases.

“If the Aussies aren’t going to go back to basics over the next week, it could be another horror movie. For the sake of runs, move your feet. It has to be a basics first approach for the Australian team at training.”

While White thinks Marnus Labuschagne should be dropped, he doesn’t believe the Australian selectors will feel the same given the lack of depth in the country’s batting reserve.

“(It’s) highly unlikely they’re going to start dropping batters just one test into a five-test series... if they did, who goes where?” White commented.

“Marnus Labuschagne is the man most likely and probably should be dropped. He’s horribly out of form and he’s out of touch… but move Marnus out and who comes in?

“Josh Inglis is there as a reserve batter and wicketkeeper but that also poses a few interesting questions… McSweeney will get another chance but Jasprit Bumrah with a pink ball… it’s the stuff of nightmares.”

The second Test begins in Adelaide on December 6.
