New Gold Coast Sun Daniel Rioli suffered a knee injury at a training session on Wednesday, the club has confirmed.

After undergoing scans following the mishap, it’s been revealed that the 27-year-old injured his MCL (media collateral ligament) in his left knee.

The club will decide whether Rioli will go in for surgery to repair the injury in the coming week.

While an MCL injury could rule Rioli out for more than a handful of weeks, he shouldn’t miss any of the 2025 AFL season if his recovery goes to plan.

The half-back joined the Suns this off-season after requesting a trade from Richmond where he played in three premierships and won the 2024 Jack Dyer Medal for club best and fairest.

The Suns parted with picks 6 and 23 in exchange for Rioli with the Tigers sending the defender north alongside picks 51, 61, 70 and 76.

Gold Coast open their 2025 AFL campaign against Essendon at People First Stadium on Saturday, March 8.
