Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) Chairman John Kanga has explained why there has been so much racing at the Caulfield Heath track of late.
Kanga said the refurbishment of Sandown and the main track at Caulfield meant that weekend metro racing had to be held on the Heath on Saturday.
There has been some criticism of the inside track at Caulfield, and although Kanga admits it’s not a Saturday type of track going forward, he does believe it is holding up well.
“Unfortunately for the industry and for us, both of our tracks at Sandown and Caulfield are being refurbished, so the timing couldn’t have been worse,” Kanga said ion SENTrack’s Giddy Up.
“Luckily we do have the inside track to run on and I fairness it’s doing very, very well.
“Ideally it’s a summer type track. It’s not a normal Saturday track and it won’t be going forward other than through this period of change.
“It’s an acceptable track, it’s not a Saturday track, and that’s the feedback that I’m getting from punters, from owners, from jockeys and participants, and that’s ok, we just have to be honest with it. But it’s actually a good track to punt on.
“It was never designed that it was going to be a Saturday track. I just wanted to diffuse. Social media can blow up and we can all get crazy about it, but it was never designed to be a Saturday track.
“It’s serving its purpose at the moment and it’s serving its purpose really well. The track is performing exceptionally well.”
Racing will return to Caulfield Heath this Wednesday, December 18.
