It was a tale as old as time for Newcastle Knights’ fans in 2024 as the club experienced a first or second-week finals exit for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
The Knights’ struggled to build consistency across both their best seventeen and results, winning in clusters before losing in clusters at different stretches through the year.
The club also failed to land on a halves pairing, rotating through 11 different combinations, with Jackson Hastings, Phoenix Crossland, Jack Cogger, Tyson Gamble and Will Pryce all spending time there during the season.
The emergence of Kai Pearce-Paul and Dylan Lucas as genuine first grade second rowers was a bright spot during the season, as well as the debut of the electric Fletcher Sharpe, but for the club to go deeper into the finals, the Knights’ must find a halves pairing that can relieve the pressure on captain Kalyn Ponga.
