Hawthorn star Will Day could spend more time inside 50 in 2025, with the 23-year-old training forward over summer.

Kane Cornes understands why the Hawks may be considering the move, given the injury issues Day has already had in his career.

Moving him forward may take some crash and bash out of the equation and add more versatility to his game.

“I reckon this is a bit of Hawthorn trying to look after him. Protecting him from himself given the issues he has had with his body,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s not a noted goal kicker and I haven’t seen much forward craft from him because he was a half back and then an amazing midfielder.

“It probably feels a bit premature to then be moving him forward, but if it’s to look after their best player and to get the best out of him, then maybe he does spend a bit of time forward.

“Maybe he goes from having 30 and nine clearances to 21 and 7 score involvements and two goals and he doesn’t have the bash and crash for 90 per cent of the game in the midfield.

“Hawthorn is as versatile as it comes and I think if you play for Hawthorn, you can expect that you’re not going to play just one position. And if you only play one position, your spot is in danger.”

The Hawks have a number of versatile pieces, including captain James Sicily, Josh Weddle, Jack Gunston and Blake Hardwick.
