Sri Lanka has defeated Australia in the first ODI match in Colombo, thanks to some incredible Charith Asalanka batting.

The captain bashed 127 off 126 balls, with minimal help around him. Only two other batsmen cleared 15 runs as they set 214 in the first innings.

The Aussie top order offered nothing in response, with Matthew Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Cooper Connolly dismissed cheaply.

Alex Carey (41 off 38) and Aaron Hardie (32 off 37) were the only batsmen who got going as Australia fizzled out for 165.

Maheesh Theekshana was the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets and bowling a maiden.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in Colombo for the second and final ODI of the tour.
