Form analysts Mick Gannon and Dean Watling have a few horses they are gravitating towards at Randwick on Saturday.
Gannon is siding with the Allan Kehoe-trained Shaggy in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) as the unbeaten gelding continues his Golden Slipper preparations.
Shaggy led all to win the Pierro Plate a fortnight ago and Gannon feels that run his him perfectly placed for his next assignment.
“I think Shaggy just wins this race,” Gannon said on SENTrack’s Giddy Up.
“His performance (last start) was enormous. He was out of favour with the punters, SP’d around $7.50.
“He’s right in Slipper contention. The map is favourable, he’ll be right out in front.
“He was racing on ground that was slightly inferior so I still think he’s got a bit to come. He’s fourth-up here now, and this would be a career peak run for him I’d imagine.
“I think he wins and is clearly the best bet of the day.
“And just a little something on Nielsen Park.”
Shaggy, who will be ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, is currently rated the $2.25 favourite with Sportsbet for the Skyline.
Watling outlined why he believes debutant Nielsen Park, for Anthony & Sam Freedman, can run a nice race at big odds.
“Shaggy deserves to be favourite,” said Watling
“But I’ve landed on Nielsen Park. This horse is a ridiculous price at $41.
“Good jump out, a really nice recent trial. Ridiculous odds and you can have a small, tiny spec on that horse.”
Nielsen Park is currently priced at $35/$7 for Race 4 at Randwick.
Watling is also keen to be with Amelia’s Jewel in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m).
James McDonald rides the Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald-trained mare who resumes and owns a great first-up record (6:4-2-0).
“One of the best placed horses in the country on Saturday,” Watling said.
“Amelia’s Jewel picks herself. They’ve figured her out now, first-up over 1400m, two really sharp trials, gets James aboard, I don’t think the gate matters too much when you’ve got James on.
“That first-up effort behind Royal Patronage stacks up really well throughout the spring. I would not be surprised if she starts sub $2.
“She’s my best bet of the day.”
Gannon added: “I think she’s the class horse in the race.
“It’s her race to win.”
Amelia’s Jewel is the $2.30 favourite for the Guy Walter (Race 6) on Saturday.
