Where things went horribly wrong for Port in Magpies slaughter

Things went horribly wrong for Port Adelaide in their 91-point Round 1 loss to Collingwood at the MCG, the biggest defeat of coach Ken HInkley’s 275-game coaching career.

The Power were simply outclassed from the get-go, with the Magpies keen on responding to their 52-point loss to GWS the week before.

While the Power couldn’t do much to stop the Collingwood onslaught, SEN’s David Schwarz thinks that they put themselves in a bind before the ball was even bounced at selection.

After hearing all week that the Magpies were too old and too slow, Schwarz thinks that the Power went too small to try and run their opposition off their feet.

“There's going to be a lot of talk in Adelaide today because Ken Hinkley is one game into his last season, and they have been flogged,” Schwarz said on SEN’s Point of View with The Ox & Harty.

“I'll say this about Port Adelaide, and I was lucky enough to call the game last night.  They got it horribly wrong with their selection, horribly wrong.

“When you've got Ollie Wines in the ruck as your second ruckman, you're taking away a really good midfielder for your ball movement and you're putting him in the ruck and putting his safety in jeopardy.

“He doesn't have shin guards, he's up against a huge ruckman.

“I thought Ken Hinkley and his match committee got it really wrong. They were undersized. They thought they were going to outrun Collingwood because everyone had heard that Collingwood was slow.”

Instead of being too slow, the Magpies seemed to spread everywhere from the contest and found players inside 50 with ease, kicking an impressive 21.10 (136).

Schwarz thinks the performance was a huge response to their critics and a reminder that they’re a genuine contender in 2025.

“But I'll tell you what Collingwood did, they stuck it up them,” Schwarz said.

“They're a proud club. They're not just going to roll over.

“They had a bad week the week before against GWS, and that response is what you want to see from a really, really good footy side.”
