In Carlton's entire history, I doubt they've ever had a worse case of the Blues following a Round 1 performance that was so inept in the second half, it definitely needs to be scrubbed from the history books.
And we all know there's only one way to do the scrubbing, and that's a big win against the Hawks.
Easier said than done. And perhaps after listening to Daniel Hoyne, they need to do something both creative and radical to a degree.
They need to unchain the heart of their forward line.
Yes, it's indeed time to unchain Charlie (Curnow), the true heart of the Carlton forward line, and take him from the deepest forward to a roaming forward up the ground that can savage the midfield of the opposition and provide that contested beast so important in modern-day football transition as outlined by Daniel Hoyne last night.
Hoyne: “What I do want to talk about is your ability to be able to win a contest ahead of the footy and how critical that is going to be this year.”
“The ability to be able to score out of your back half is coming into vogue more and more and more. When you actually score from a chain out of your back half, two out of three times, at some stage, you have to win a contested possession.
“Two out of three times. More often than not, that contested possession is going to be needed to be won across the half forward area of the ground. When you win that contested possession, 33% of the time, that translates to a score.”
Yes, the numbers don't lie. In two out of three of the scores coming from the back half up the ground, there's a contest in the front half of the ground. If you're going to score a goal, you've got to win that contested ball.
And who's Carlton's contested player in the front half? The names don't flow off the tongue. There's one man and one man only.
It's Charlie Curnow. He's great in the air. He's great in the ground.
He's like Superman. He's got an amazing tank. He's a beautiful field kick.
He's potentially Jeremy Cameron, Mark Two.
Harry McKay can push to the goal square, replacing the role of Curnow.
Carlton need desperately to kickstart their season tomorrow night to obliterate the memories of that disaster a week ago.
Unchain Charlie and give the Hawks something to think about.
