Who did the coaches miss in Round 2?
Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has assessed which players were overlooked in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award.
See who the coaches missed below:
George Hewett (Carlton)
“I want to give George Hewett some love,” he said on SEN’s Sportsday.
“He did get a vote from the coaches, so he wasn’t completely missed, but he was the fourth highest player on the ground.
“His role on Will Day was really important, the 24th rated player on the ground. A superb two-way job there from George Hewett.”
Ed Richards (Western Bulldogs)
“10 votes the week before but didn’t get a vote this week. He could have easily got one.
“Second highest rated player on the ground. A great start to the year.”
Matt Crouch (Adelaide)
“Fourth highest rated player on the ground, didn’t get a vote.
“32 disposals, 29 of them effective and a game-high 10 score involvements.”
Jy Simpkin (North Melbourne)
“I’m really happy for this guy. Fifth highest rated player in the comp, but has never been a top-130 player on our ratings.
“I wonder if this is the year that he can be?”
Jordan Clark (Fremantle)
“Second highest rated player on the ground, didn’t get a vote.
“A career-high impact with his ball-winning ability on the weekend with 12 contested possessions. He’d never done that before.”
Hoyne also revealed the round’s Most Damaging Player (MDP).
“How good was Zach Merrett on Saturday!," said Hoyne.
“I’ll be flabbergasted if we see a higher rating game for the year.
“36 (disposals) and 4 (goals), his rating was absolutely superb, he was the highest rated ball user of any player in the comp in Round 2.”
