Kane Cornes and Gerard Healy have shared their thoughts on Port Adelaide defender Miles Bergman after Sam Edmund revealed St Kilda were at the front of the queue for the out-of-contract 23-year-old.
Cornes was doubtful on the prospects of Bergman when he first arrived at Port Adelaide, but he’s seen enough evidence in the last few seasons to change his mind.
“I really like him as a player,” Cornes said on SEN’s Sportsday.
“And the thing I like about Miles Bergman is his improvement.
“When he first started, I was going, ‘This guy's not going to make it’.
“He was fumbly, he made shocking errors, and those errors stand out when you possess the ball, you're (in the) back 50 often because of the position you play.
“But every single year, I've gone, ‘Geez, he's improved there’.
“Now he's tough in the air. He's an excellent intercept defender, and he'll fit in nicely (if the Saints get him).”
Healy said Bergman is a “good player now” and while his background makes him an obvious target for the club, it doesn’t guarantee he’ll end up there.
“(He’s a) Bayside boy, went to St Bedes (Mentone College)… but you could have said the same about Finn Callaghan, he’s a Bayside boy as well and he is staying with the Giants,” said Healy.
Bergman and the Power will take on Essendon at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night to kick off Round 3.
