Why Ange's sacking has backfired on Tottenham

Tottenham’s decision to move on from Ange Postecoglou has been far from vindicated, and according to Mark Bosnich, the club is far from safe from what would be a disastrous relegation.

Replacing Postecoglou with Danish manager Thomas Frank, the decision was simple enough to grasp. Despite Ange’s Europa League triumph, Tottenham could only muster a 17th placed finish – their lowest ever finish in the Premier League era.

Within that same season, Frank guided Brentford to 10th, establishing the club as a mid-table Premier League side after taking over while the club dwelled in the second tier.

That said, the 2025/26 season has been far from what the club would have hoped. As it stands, Tottenham currently reside in 14th place, winning just seven of their 23 games thus far.

Winless in their last five league games, Spurs have won just two of their last 14 in the Premier League, and despite a positive start to their Champions League campaign, they remain distant outsiders in their hopes of taking home back-to-back European trophies.

Eliminated from both the FA Cup and the League Cup, Frank may only have the Champions League to hang his hat on, and if his side can’t fix their Premier League form, Bosnich fears that the club could suffer the same fate as their league rivals did just a decade ago.

“This is what happened to Aston Villa,” Bosnich told SEN’s Gloves Off.

“There were successive seasons where they were around the bottom – Aston Villa won a Champions League! People say, ‘(Spurs) are too big to go down’… (Villa) went down.

“You’ve got to be careful. Last year, 17th, this year 14th, but they are only eight points off of 18th. The lack of stability with the coaching, Daniel Levy is gone as well.

“It just makes the Ange decision look absolutely ridiculous. Yes, they were 17th, but you’ve got to say, they won a trophy! I think because of the injuries, Ange has just gone, ‘we are going to concentrate completely on the Europa League’.

“And so they should, they were one of the favourites, (it was) the first time in 22 years that CL teams didn’t drop down - it was the right gamble.

“To give him 10 games to start this season, what was the big deal? Now, Daniel Levy has lost his job, Ange lost his job…”

Despite the trouble that Frank has experienced at Spurs thus far, Bosnich doesn't believe that the club should move on from the manager just yet.

“The only thing I will say is that they haven’t really given Frank an opportunity in the transfer window to get his type of players in,” he said.

“It’s still pretty much Ange’s side, so to sack him now, I think would be wrong, but at the end of the season, if things continue…

“Their home record sees them in 19th position. Only Wolves have got a worse home record than them. They are having trouble playing in front of their own fans, the expectation is affecting them.

“Whether they can change that narrative, or someone can come in and do it, is a question they have to answer.

“At the moment, it’s highly unlikely that they are going to finish in a European place. They are on 28 points in 14th place, it’s gettable, but for a club like Tottenham to miss European football is a disaster!

“This will make or break Thomas Frank’s future.”

Tottenham’s Premier League fixture run is far from favourable, facing Manchester City, Manchester United (A), Newcastle and Arsenal in their next four.

Losses in all four, and Spurs will find themselves well and truly in the danger zone.
