The "huge" cultural change brought on by Blues recruits

Carlton might have lost out on Charlie Curnow, but as new club assistant Travis Boak reports, their package from the Swans is already paying dividends.

Acquiring Oliver Florent and Will Hayward from Sydney on the final day of trade period, the Blues landed more than just a pair of talented footballers, with the club citing their immense influence on team morale approaching the new season.

Natural extroverts, the two best mates have shifted the culture at the Blues, and according to Boak – who joined the club as a Leadership, Performance and Culture manager over the offseason – their effect on the group has transcended their on-field contributions.

“They have been huge,” Boak told SEN Breakfast.

“I noticed it straight away – even the language from all the players is how much of a positive impact they’ve had on the group.

“Not only on the field and the professionalism they’ve brought from Sydney and the impact they’re going to have on the ground, but the energy that they’ve brought and the excitement.

“The fun and joy that they have and the extroverted nature of who they are has been huge for the playing group.

“I think they’re all really enjoying having those boys at the club.”

Beyond the new recruits, Carlton have managed to successfully guide star midfielder Sam Walsh through his first uninterrupted pre-season since 2021.

Suffering numerous back, foot and hamstring concerns over the last four seasons, Boak has reported that the former No.1 pick is flying, back to his best after a torrid run.

“He’s had a full pre-season, hasn’t been interrupted at all by any injuries,” Boak stated.

“Chatting to him the other day, he feels as good as he ever has, mentally, physically, he is ready to go.

“If you saw his internal trial game the other day, you’d see he’s back to his best running ability and explosiveness.

“It’s exciting to have him on the park and healthy.”

The Blues take to the park against Brisbane in their first practice match on Wednesday afternoon.
