Lions to appeal two suspensions at Tribunal

The Brisbane Lions will appeal the suspensions of Harris Andrews and Darcy Gardiner at the AFL Tribunal.

But they are willing to accept Zac Bailey's one-match ban.

All three players were handed bans by the MRO after their five-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, with Andrews' three-match suspension the heftiest of the lot.

The Lions' co-captain was suspended for a swinging arm on Arty Jones, which concussed the Western Bulldogs small forward on Saturday night.

This punishment, in the eyes of Kane Cornes, was too harsh and he believes that the All-Australian defender should be given a more lenient punishment.

“I think we have tipped over on the scales of reports and suspensions,” Cornes said on SEN’s Fireball.

“It’s got to the point where we’ve gone too far.

“Harris Andrews didn’t mean to do that. I’ve heard a lot of people say ‘he turned around and he saw him and he whacked him in the head and wanted to knock him (out)’. No he didn’t.

“It was an unfortunate accident.”

Cornes also felt that Bailey should be freed from a one-match ban for his elbow on Michael Sellwood, which was deemed to be intentional, high contact and low impact.

But the Lions have opted against an appeal with Bailey to miss next Saturday's clash against the Swans.

“With Zac Bailey, yep, it was an elbow, it was stupid, but that’s a fine. Missing a week for that? He didn’t even feel that,” he continued.

“I just think we’ve tipped the scales too far which was always going to happen.”

It prompted a discussion with co-host David King, who has been an advocate for protecting the head, but on this occasion feels Andrews was harshly dealt with by the Match Review Officer.

King: “I got smashed for saying this - yes, we’re trying to stamp out concussions - but I thought Andrews meant to body check.

“He’s flushed him in the face. I said three weeks down to one, and it got hammered on the weekend.

“There was no intention (to hurt), it’s a rarity.”

Cornes: “It’s a one-weeker if anything, I’m 100 per cent with you.

“There’s going to be accidents, like the Ollie Florent knee to the head of Isaac Heeney. So if Andrews goes, Florent goes.”

King: “I didn’t like the Zac Bailey one, I’ve got no problem with that being a week.”

Cornes: “No one liked it but it wasn’t hard enough to miss a week.”

While Gardiner received his one-match ban for his forearm colliding with Aaron Naughton's head during a marking contest, which saw the Bulldogs forward receive a 50 metre penalty.

The Tribunal is expected to deliberate on these matters on Tuesday.
