"I was swayed": Why Brandy is glad fans stormed field for AJ

After seeing thousands of fans run onto the Allianz Stadium field to celebrate Alex Johnston’s all-time tries record, Greg Alexander admits he's glad that fans didn’t follow the NRL’s rules.

Despite the Rabbitohs losing 26-18 to their rivals, the Sydney Roosters, on Friday night, the night will long be remembered as the game where the winger surpassed Ken Irvine’s record for the most tries in competition history.

While it was not a given that the 31-year-old would achieve the record on Friday night, the NRL made sure to prepare just in case.

Hours before the match, the league sent out correspondence on social media warning fans not to run out onto the field or face the possibility of fines and stadium bans.

But after scoring his second try for the match and his 213th of his NRL career within the first minute of the second half, that directive was ignored by most fans.

Whilst having said during Monday’s edition of SEN’s Kick Off that fans should not storm the field, the Penrith Panthers legend admitted that after seeing the vision, the moment was made much better by the fans getting around Johnston.

“I was swayed,” Alexander told SEN’s Saturday League Kick Off.

“I was sort of in Wayne’s camp, I thought, let’s not stop the game for 20 minutes or half an hour, let’s celebrate Alex Johnston post-game, and I thought that would have been good enough.

“But when the fans ran out there…I thought I’m a believer.

“I don’t think it would have been the same if the fans didn’t run on the field.

“So, it all worked out well; they got off the field pretty quickly. There was little disruption, and it really made the moment.”

Alexander wasn’t the only one happy to see the fans run out on the field with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noting the moment’s context within the game.

“It’s a moment of celebration, and it’s a great Rugby League moment,” he said to SEN League.

“It’s a great moment for Souths, and it’s a great moment for the game."

Following Johnston’s achievement, the Bunnies now move their attention to their Round 3 clash against the Wests Tigers in Gosford.

That will take place on March 21 with kick-off at 7:35pm AEDT.
