For his entire NRL career, Luke Metcalf has started as either the No. 6 or No. 7.
But which position does he prefer to play?
Having spent his time at the Sharks and his first two seasons with the Warriors as a five-eighth, Metcalf filled the void left by retiring Shaun Johnson in 2025, becoming the club’s starting halfback.
And the move proved to be a masterstroke by coach Andrew Webster.
With an increased role in the spine, Metcalf had his best season to date, scoring eight tries and nine try assists.
That saw him lead the Dally M Medal before voting went behind closed doors while pushing the Warriors into the top four.
Despite his strong form, an ACL tear during their Round 17 clash against the Broncos brought his season to an end.

Following Metcalf’s season-ending injury, Tanah Boyd took up the No. 7 jersey in his absence.
He continued this role into 2026 with the former Titans half being instrumental to their 3-1 start.
So good has Boyd’s form been, he's remained starting halfback with Metcalf taking up Chanel Harris-Tavita’s spot at five-eighth.
But if the 27-year-old had his way, he would like to play at halfback once more.
“I prefer playing halfback if I’m completely honest,” Metcalf told SEN 1170 and SENQ’s The Run Home.
“I’m someone that the more responsibility I have, the better I play.
“I want the ball and need the ball in my hands to do what I want to do.
“Having had a taste of that last year, that’s something I want to continue to do with my career.”
However, Metcalf is willing to make the most of the position he’s currently in, considering the time he spent on the sidelines.

“But as of right now, coming back from having a bit of a layoff, I’ve got to do what I've got to do,” he continued.
“Playing six right now, I’ve got to see how I can involve myself the most by doing that.
“That’s something that will make me a better player by doing that.”
Metcalf and the Warriors will look to rebound from their first loss of the season when they play his former side, Cronulla, on Sunday.
Kick off takes place at Ocean Protect Stadium from 2pm AEST.
SEN League will have live coverage of the match available on SEN’s radio network and on the SEN app from 1pm with the Bunnings Build-Up.
