Every four years the FIFA World Cup rolls around as the biggest sporting event in the world.
These are the stalwarts, the regulars, the resolute, those who have endured at the elite level.
Today we feature the Top 10 most appearances in FIFA World Cup history.
1 - Lionel Messi (Argentina) - 30 appearances
Outrageous to think he's about to play in his sixth World Cup. He became the first player to reach 30 World Cup appearances in Argentina's Round of 32 clash with Cape Verde. He scored a hat-trick against Algeria to kick off the 2026 edition at the ripe old age of 38 in his 27th outing on the biggest stage. He now holds the World Cup goals record with 20, and counting. Messi is a modern day marvel who could well hold the appearances record for a very long time to come.
2 - Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) - 27 appearances
The evergreen Ronaldo, like his peer Messi, has featured at a sixth World Cup. At 41, he remains an absolute specimen who continues to use his fitness and athleticism to mix it with the best. Portugal's talisman has maintained elite performance deep into his career. He has bypassed the likes of Paolo Maldini, Mirolsav Klose and Lothar Matthäus to move to 27 World Cup appearances - the second most in history behind Messi. The Round of 16 loss to Spain was his final appearance at a World Cup.
3 - Lothar Matthäus (Germany) - 25 appearances
Remains one of the World Cup's most enduring figures. The original WC veteran as the first outfield player to feature in five tournaments. Captained West Germany to the 1990 World Cup title. Finished with 150 caps which is a national record.

He featured at each of the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments, leading his country to the Final in Russia in 2018 where he won Golden Ball. He is widely considered as Croatia's best ever footballer who reached 200 total caps in the group stage. He made his 23rd and possibly final World Cup appearance in a dramatic 2-1 Round of 32 defeat to Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. Will he return in four years? It seems unlikely given he is 41 in September.
Eq.5 - Paolo Maldini (Italy) - 23 appearances

Eq.8 - Uwe Seeler (West Germany) - 21 appearances
Seeler was a model of consistency across four tournaments. He became the first ever player to reach 20 appearances back in 1970. Seeler also nicked another record from Pele by just minutes when he became the first player to score at four World Cups.
Eq.8 - Władysław Żmuda (Poland) - 21 appearances
