The Metro Tunnel is open, and with Melbourne and Hawthorn going head-to-head at the MCG this Saturday, there are more options than ever to get home ahead of the crowds.

Melbourne host Hawthorn at the 'G on Saturday in a match that's sure to draw a big crowd. The good news? Getting out of the ground is a little easier than it used to be – and if you plan your route right, you might just beat the rush.

Here's a quick breakdown by line:

· Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury Line

Walk, tram or train from Jolimont to Flinders Street, then head into Town Hall station and jump on a train through the Metro Tunnel. You'll sidestep the usual Richmond Station crowd and there's a good chance you'll actually get a seat.

· Hurstbridge and Mernda lines

You're laughing. Head through to Jolimont as usual – nothing changes for you.

· Craigieburn, Upfield, Werribee and Williamstown lines

Find your way to Flinders Street via tram, train or walk, and you're on your way.

· Sandringham, Frankston, Belgrave, Lilydale, Alamein and Glen Waverley lines

Richmond Station is still your best bet. No need to change your routine.

The Metro Tunnel has opened up some genuine time-saving options for those heading south and west of the city – so it's worth having a think about your route before the final siren sounds. Plan ahead. Check the PTV app or head to transport.vic.gov.au before you head to the ground.
