“I wouldn’t”: Longmuir reacts to Cornes’ Carlton call

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir is comfortable with his current contract and wouldn’t take a call from Carlton.

The notion of the Blues asking the question of Longmuir was floated by Kane Cornes earlier in the week.

Cornes believes the Blues should be looking at the Freo coach in the wake of Michael Voss’ departure.

But Longmuir is not interested.

“No, I wouldn’t,” he said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters when asked if he’d consider a phone call.

“I’m very comfortable coaching Freo, I’m very comfortable with the contract I’ve got at the moment.

“I understand the noise around it and what it looks like externally without diving into the facts.

“But just like all contracts aren’t the same, all employment agreements aren’t the same. I’m very confident and comfortable with the level of security it gives me and my family.

“I’m very comfortable with where it sits with the club. We all are, so it’s a non-story from my point of view.”

Cornes reckons Longmuir, who is on a rolling one-year contract, is one man the Blues should go after given he does not have job security at Freo despite their strong start to the 2026 season.

“If you want the best available coach right now, I think it’s Justin Longmuir,” Cornes said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters.

“If you’re looking and ranking who are the best coaches in the league, I’ve got him as the sixth best coach in the league right now.”

Cornes added: “Go and at least try and get him. Try and give him a five-year deal at $6 million.

“Give him the security that he needs that Fremantle have been unprepared to give him.

“He is coaching extremely well, eight (wins) in a row ... And he’s available right now and he’s the sixth best coach in the league. Go and get him.”

Cornes admits it’s long odds but cannot see any harm in asking the question.

"Maybe he's happy at Fremantle, I get it's a long shot,” he conceded.

“But at least try and get him if you want a known product that you know can do the job right now."

Longmuir currently has the Dockers sitting second on the ladder with a record of 8-1 ahead of Sunday’s clash with Essendon at the MCG.
