Why Fraser won't become Carlton's next full time coach

Carlton’s interim coach, Josh Fraser, has ruled himself out of potentially becoming the club’s next full-time coach.

On Tuesday, the Bluebaggers parted ways with former coach Michael Voss after four and a half seasons of service.

Following his departure, Carlton appointed Fraser as their interim for the remaining.

This will be the first time that the former Collingwood and Gold Coast ruckman will coach an AFL side.

He does have plenty of experience as a head coach, having been in charge of Gold Coast’s NEAFL side alongside the Northern Blues, then Northern Bullants, and Collingwood’s VFL sides.

While he does hope to become an AFL head coach at a later stage, Fraser told the media that he won’t be putting up his hand this time around, believing he wasn’t quite ready for that role.

“I’m ambitious, and I want to be a senior coach at some point,” he explained.

“As we stand here right now, I probably don’t think I’m quite ready.

“But what this opportunity does give me is a chance to jump in the driver’s seat, learn a lot about myself, and hopefully at the end of it be better placed.

“I’m focused on how we collectively move this club forward.

“This is not my job.

“I’m an interim coach, but I’ve got a job to do, and that is (to) help the club.”

Fraser’s first game in charge comes this Saturday when Carlton takes on the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.

The match begins at 7:35pm AEST.
