  • Substitute Mikel Merino came off the bench to score a winner in stoppage time.

  • The 2010 champions will meet the winner of USA v Belgium in the quarter finals.

  • There was chaos late as Croatia thought they had an equaliser 13 minutes into the allotted 10 of extra-time, but VAR intervened and chalked it off for offside in the lead-up.
  • Portugal will take on Spain in the Round of 16 in Dallas on Tuesday, July 7.

  • Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon has now kept five straight clean sheets at World Cups, including the Round of 16 in 2022 when they eventually lost to Morocco in penalties.
  • Spain have not conceded in 519 minutes of World Cup action which is a new record, beating that of Italy and Walter Zenga.
  • Mikel Oyarzabal has now scored four goals at this World Cup to lead the way for Spain.

  • It was the second time they have come from two goals down to win a World Cup knockout match having done the same against Japan in 2018.

  • Veteran gloveman Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa came on as a late sub to mark quite possibly his final appearance in a Mexico shirt. Now back-up to Raul Rangel, Ochoa will retire from the national team at the end of the World Cup.
  • Host nation Mexico topped Group A with three wins, six goals scored and zero conceded. It's the first time El Tri has won all three group stage games.

  • England created 19 shots but could only conjure three on target.
  • A total of three combined saves were made by the two goalkeepers - all by Ghana's Benjamin Asare.
