Should the Brisbane Broncos consider using Reece Walsh as a five-eighth going forward?
That was the question under consideration across the SEN airwaves following their shock win against Penrith.
On Thursday night, the Broncos broke their eight-game losing streak, beating the ladder-leading Panthers no less at CommBank Stadium with a 14-12 win.
Walsh played a crucial role in their victory, taking on more of a playmaking role, having assisted all three of Brisbane’s tries alongside three line break assists and running for 134 metres.
Following their win, Luke Keary on Fox League believes that he could transition into a stellar five-eighth and follow in the footsteps of Broncos great Darren Lockyer, who made a similar transition from fullback to five-eighth.
That sentiment was endorsed by Corey Parker on SENQ Breakfast, who discussed the possibility with Andrew McCullough.
Parker: “I like it. I absolutely love it.”
McCullough: “I don't like it.”
Parker: You don't like it?
McCullough: Not yet, not yet.
“We haven't seen him defensively yet.
Parker: “Didn't you see the Origin match the other night?”
McCullough: “That's 15 to 20 minutes; that's not the sustained 80 minutes each and every week.”
While on SEN’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns, the 1997 Premiership winner thinks that the reigning Clive Churchill Medallist has played himself into form following his showing for the Maroons in Game III.
“Last night he played halfback, and he defended at fullback,” Johns said.
“There were little signs in Origin 3. I thought OK, you can see Reece is about to hit a purple patch.”
This was picked up by Denan Kemp, who believes that Walsh has shown on more than enough occasions that he can be the guy.
“I think it's interesting to see the dynamic with him and (Adam) Reynolds at the moment,” Kemp added.
“I think last year there was a bit more of an unsure of who's the main man.
“I think the team has fully leant into the fact (this year) and you saw a few times when Walsh didn't get the ball, he was blowing up.
“I just think they've gotta lean all the way into Walsh because whenever he's got his hands on the ball, he makes things happen.”
The Broncos will now switch their attention to their next match next Saturday when they travel to Townsville, where they take on the Cowboys.
Kick-off takes place at 7:35pm AEST with SEN having live coverage of the match with Broncos Radio on SENQ and on the SEN app from 7pm.
