Lyon: Uncapped Vic team would beat SA and WA

The next time the Victorian team plays State of Origin in 2028, it could have a fairly different look and feel to this year’s team.

Obviously there’s a number of players such as Marcus Bontempelli, Nick Daicos, Zak Butters, Bailey Smith and others who will likely remain first-choice for the Vics in early 2028.

But there is still a very strong team to be made up of those who did not play in this year’s iteration of the Origin concept.

Garry Lyon - a staunch Victorian who was Chairman of Selectors for the Big V earlier this year - has put together a team of uncapped players who by the time the next Victoria game rolls around could be firmly in the mix.

Lyon reckons this team would beat both the South Australia and Western Australia Origin sides.

“Now you’ve got to add Daicos, Bontempelli, Sam Darcy, Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell, and all those stars have got to go in the mix,” Lyon admitted on SEN Breakfast.

“But imagine Nick Watson in a Big V jumper next to Logan Morris with Josh Treacy and Murphy Reid running around, and Harley doing his thing.

“Ohhh come on, we might (as well) just play each other.”

Lyon continued: “Here’s the quote - that Victorian team there which doesn’t include one single Victorian State of Origin player from this year - would beat both South Australia and Western Australia.

“This is the second Victorian team that hasn’t played yet. It would still beat Western Australia and South Australia, in my humble opinion.”
