With Clint Gutherson’s future with St. George Illawarra up in the air, Dragons coach Dean Young has given an update on where the 31-year-old’s future lies with the side.
Joining the club in 2025 on a three-year deal after nine seasons with the Eels, the 31-year-old has spent the last two years in the fullback jersey.
In that time, Gutherson has managed to run for an average of 153 metres whilst scoring 10 tries as the club finds itself at the bottom of the ladder.
But with the Dragons securing the services of North Queensland fullback Scott Drinkwater during their signing spree throughout the season, there have been question marks surrounding the club’s plans with the co-captain.
While he won’t be in his preferred position, the 2010 Premiership player turned coach is keen to find a spot for Gutherson given his positive influence on the side.
“I've had this conversation with Clint too,” Young explained on SEN’s Front Office with Vossy.
"It's not gonna be fullback if Drinky (Scott Drinkwater) is fit and playing well, but he obviously can back up Drinky.
“I'll give him an opportunity in the pre-season to train in the centres, on the wing and even coming off the bench as a ball-playing 13.
“He's just a footy player, Clint. He's a competitor as you have all seen and his energy is infectious for the group.
“So, he'll be in the team somewhere, and we'll see where we land.”
Gutherson won’t feature for the Red V in 2026 after going under the knife for knee surgery.
The Dragons will look to make it three wins in a row when they take on the Bulldogs on Saturday night.
That takes place at Allianz Stadium from 7:35pm AEST.
