Fagan 'not sure' if he'll continue coaching after historic three-peat

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan has admitted he is unsure if this will be his last game in charge of the Lions following their premiership success.

Since taking over the side in 2017 from Justin Leppitsch, the 65-year-old has turned Brisbane from wooden spooners into the reigning back-to-back-to-back premiers following their seven-point win over Fremantle on Saturday afternoon at the MCG.

This sees Fagan join the likes of Leigh Matthews, Jock McHale, Alastair Clarkson and Norm Smith in achieving the three-peat.

Having now been at the club for 10 seasons and with his contract concluding at the end of 2027, there is some rumours circulating that he could choose to step away from coaching following the Lions’ success.

The former Hawthorn GM of Football Operations noted that this type of finish would be the ‘dream way to finish’ his coaching career but would give more time to think about his options.

“I've been coaching the club for 10 years now and I've got to work out whether it's the right thing to continue on,” Fagan said in his post-game press conference.

“Which might sound a strange thing for me to say after we've just won a premiership, but I don't really wanna be that guy that hangs around until we fail.

“There's a little bit inside me that would rather walk away when the team is on top; I've gotta be honest.

“It's sort of the dream way to finish, in many ways, cos for most coaches, unfortunately, it ends in tragedy. Usually you've been given the boot, so I've just got to work out whether I've still got the energy required to do that relentless responsibility and pressure that comes from being an AFL coach.

“You don't really know what I'm talking about until you do it yourself, but it overtakes your life, and I don't know whether I wanna keep doing that or I don't.’

As of Round 23 this year, Fagan has the record for the most games coached at the club.
