One of Hawthorn’s most in-demand talents has recommitted to the club… but it could come at a cost.

Calsher Dear has opted to re-sign with the Hawks, committing to remain at the club for a further two seasons after a lengthy negotiation process.

21-year-old Dear was courted by Melbourne for some time, looking to acquire the young key forward ahead of next season with a significant pay rise on offer at the Dees.

However, after the Hawks upped their offer to their father-son talent, Dear made the decision to re-sign, looking to fight his way into the first 23 for at least another two years.

While Hawthorn would be thrilled with Calsher’s decision, the flow-on effect sparked by his commitment could cost the club another of their promising young talents.

Particularly given the club's desire to add yet another key forward to their ranks in Ben King from the Gold Coast Suns.

“I reckon there’s a flow-on effect from Calsher Dear staying at the Hawks, and I reckon it involves Aidan Schubert,” Tom Morris told Trade Radio.

“He signed a two-year contract extension in June until the end of 2029. He was Pick 23 in last year’s draft, so he has only been at the club for 11 months.

“I reckon there’s a world where we see a lower level, Todd Marshall-Port Adelaide-Western Bulldogs discussion between the Gold Coast Suns and the Hawks.

“The Hawks say to the Suns, ‘Don’t match for Ben King, take the compensation for the top 10 pick, and we will then discuss trades for Aidan Schubert to the Suns separate to that’.

“That would make the Suns less likely to match, and as a result, Aidan Schubert might be on the trade table.

“Maybe he wants to go as well – either way, he has just signed a two-year contract extension.

“I think this potentially pushes him out. He is a 198cm key forward, he has been a good contributor for Box Hill, played one AFL game.

“I think there’s a real world now where that conversation materialises between the Gold Coast Suns and Hawthorn around a compensation pick and a separate trade around Aidan Schubert.

“I don’t think it’s salary cap dump-ish, or pick purchasing like Todd Marshall would have been at the Western Bulldogs – and that Port Adelaide and Western Bulldogs discussion was going on for a while.

“I think it’s pretty legit. The Sus give up a pick for Aidan Schubert – that’s not controversial in itself.

“And then, as a result, they accept the compensation and the Hawks don’t have to trade for Max King.

“That is the watch now that Calsher Dear has re-signed. That’s the flow-on effect.”

The Trade Period officially commences from Monday, October 5th.
