Chadd Sayers’ Test debut in 2018 against South Africa came during a time of turmoil for Australian cricket.
Having dominated at Sheffield Shield level for a number of years, Sayers joined the Australian Test squad as a backup bowler for their tour of South Africa.
Sayers received his call up and pulled on the baggy green for the first time in the fourth Test of the series, taking two wickets on day one.
However, the biggest moment of his career was overshadowed by the scandal that rocked the cricket world and became known as ‘Sandpapergate’.
"It was a weird week," Sayers told Cricinfo.
"With what happened in Cape Town, it was obviously a dark time for the side.
“We didn't train until the day before the game, which is really unheard of as a team. I got told at the end of that session that I would be playing."
Unfortunately for Sayers, his wife had already left South Africa following the third Test.
"I didn't really think I was going to be considered," Sayers said.
"She pretty much landed (back in Australia) when I gave her the news. So happiness and a bit of sadness as well that I couldn't really have anyone there, but that's fine."
Nonetheless, the experience of reaching the pinnacle of Australian Test cricket was an unforgettable one.
"It was excitement and nerves. You looked at some of the players in South Africa's line-up and it gave me not the best sleep the night before," Sayers said.
"I just tried to take it all in."
Following a solid performance in his debut, Sayers was struck down by a series of injuries which kept him from regaining his place in the side. He would go on to play Shield for two more seasons before playing his final game at Junction Oval against Victoria in April 2021.
Sayers joined Sam Edmund on This is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.
