Australia have started their Rugby League World Cup campaign with a win, having defeated New Zealand to begin the tournament at Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

In a clash between the World No.1 Kangaroos and the World No. 2 Kiwis, the hosts came out on top with debutant Jack Bostock justifying Kevin Walters' decision to select the winger in the 23-man squad by scoring a hat-trick to secure a 24-22 win.

Speaking after the match, the Dolphins and NSW representative couldn't quite believe how well it went.

“Can't find the words," he told Channel 7.

"Everything I dreamed of in this green and gold jersey. I got confidence from (Cam) Munster, he kicked it well so I thought go down with it well.

"This is a dream come true, I love this green and gold jersey and I want to be in it for a long time.”

Reflecting on the win, SEN League's Brett Kimmoreley was impressed by Australia's ability to hold in during the first half to go on to win.

"It was a brave performance from Australia," the 2000 World Cup Champion with Australia said.

"Under enormous pressure, they come up with two huge plays in the first half by both wingers, just to keep themselves in the game.

"Domination from the Kiwis: field position, run metres, possession, but it was 10-10 and then I thought they had their luck in the second half."
