Matt Renshaw had to wait nine and a half years to score another Test century. His match-winning 190 in the first innings against South Africa, and 82 in the second, rescuing Australia from peril in Durban.
According to SEN Cricket's Bharat Sundaresan it's the time away from the Test side that helped shape Renshaw's comeback - similar to the way professional wrestlers will stay out of the spotlight to rejuvenate their careers, much like how six time World Champion Chris Jericho would take a hiatus from the WWE during his 18 years with the company.
"The way Chris Jericho used to come back better than ever, gave him time to work on himself and his character. He was a master at reinventing himself so often and Matt Renshaw has definitely reinvented himself as a Test batter." said Sundaresan on this week's Stumps And Bumps.
"He's evolved as a batter overall and he has so many different gears to his game and also shown himself as a very useful spinner. Chris Jericho would be very proud if he had the versatility that Matt Renshaw has, and Jericho did have that in spades."
Chris Jericho has had three distinct runs with World Wrestling Entertainment since his debut in August 1999, with three world titles and one WrestleMania main event in his first stint with the organisation as a fan favourite until his hiatus in 2005. He returned to the WWE two years later with a new look and attitude, becoming a villain and dominated the main event picture winning a further three world titles before departing in 2010.
The final run between 2011 and 2017 cemented him as a modern day great, capturing the United States Championship twice and achieving the status of a Grand Slam Champion winning every major title in the WWE.
