Could this be the reason for Essendon's slow start against Geelong?

Essendon were already up against it facing off against the rampaging Geelong on Sunday afternoon and the game could have hardly got off to a worst start after they conceded the first six goals of the opening quarter.

The Bombers are currently staying in Maroochydore, which is usually roughly a two-hour drive from Brisbane.

But as captain Dyson Heppell revealed before the Round 16 clash, Essendon were forced to endure a bus ride to the ground which stretched 90 minutes longer due to congestion on the Queensland roads.

“It was a bit of a mission and we got stuck in a bit of traffic,” Heppell said on Channel 7.

“Everyone is out and about but there’s no issue and the boys are nice and calm and it won’t have too much of an impact on our preparation and we’ll be ready to go.”

The delay meant Essendon arrived at the Gabba less than hour before the game, something which no doubt would’ve impacted the build up to the match.

But the Bombers won’t be looking for excuses after a less-than-impressive start to a match they need to win to keep any hope of finals alive.
