Hawthorn is only two wins out of the top eight after upsetting Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday afternoon – leaving the Crows to rue a miserable first half.
As Hawthorn’s 2014 premiership reunion watched on from the stands, Sam Mitchell – a member of that side – and his men shot out to an early lead that would never be reigned in, going on to win 16.11 (107) to 12.8 (80).
Adelaide only kicked two goals in the opening half, with coach Matthew Nicks telling Fox Footy at the main break: “It’s one of the worst first halves we’ve had in a long time.”
But conversely, the young Hawks came to play and moved the ball at speed with precision.
“The scoreboard flattered Adelaide in the end,” Melbourne great David Schwarz said in commentary for AFL Nation.
“The Adelaide players just didn’t turn up in the first half and that’s the difference between the two sides.”
The Hawks have now won four of their last five games, with their only loss in that time coming by a single point after squandering a strong lead against Port Adelaide.
Jack Gunston booted three goals in his 250th match, including the last major of the game, while vice-captain Dylan Moore was best on for the home side.
Moore booted five goals from 27 touches and was at his dominant best in the first half. Crows midfielder Matt Crouch was the best for the visitors, collecting 25 disposals.
“This is a major step back for Adelaide now,” commentator Adam White said.
Adelaide is now two and a half games outside of the eight but will be eyeing a big win over Richmond next Thursday night.
The only concern for Hawthorn revolves around potential MRO scrutiny for Changkuoth Jiath, who was reported for headbutting Mitch Hinge in the second term.
