Why an MCG drubbing on Sunday could spell the end for Adam Simpson at the Eagles

Pressure is rapidly mounting on West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson after last week's loss to Hawthorn with reports emerging on Friday that Simpson has lost the support of large portions of the playing group.

Providing further details to the situation, SEN’s Sam Edmund says it’s undeniable that there’s a growing feeling of unrest amongst the players so much so that if the Eagles are to produce a similar performance to last week this Sunday against Melbourne it could spell the end for Simpson at the Eagles.

“My understanding of the situation is that the player unrest is real and how much I don’t profess to be able to speak for 44 guys on the list,” Edmund told SEN's Crunch Time.

“What it has done is that it’s got to the stage, and hopefully this doesn’t happen, but if they have a really grisly result against Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday then I think there’s a real chance it could be the end of the road for Adam Simpson.

“Player unrest feeds into it and is reminiscent of the game last year in Round 23 when they somehow got up to beat the Western Bulldogs when the Eagles board had gathered in the lead into that game and if it is a nasty one against Melbourne I think the Eagles board might move.”

As well as being contracted until the end of 2025, Edmund says there’s no chance the premiership-winning coach will be quitting and that if the Eagles want to see the back of him before his contract is up, they’ll have to sack him.

“It also might be one of the most painless ones, Adam Simpson knows the score, he’s in his eleventh year as coach and has won eight games in two and a half years,” Edmund added.

“He’s won a premiership, he’s made another grand final and has featured in the finals half a dozen times in his tenure.

“It’s been a darn good run but he won’t be quitting and they’re going to have to fire him. Contractually he’s signed until the end of 2025.

“He didn’t deny the player unrest report yesterday which was telling as he said it happens all the time with people not getting games and some not playing on next year and he said that he won’t be checking everyone’s phones so he was typically laid back in front of the media on Friday.”

The Eagles currently sit 16th on the ladder with three wins to their name and a percentage of 70.4.

The Eagles beat the Demons at home in Round 10 by 35 points.
