SEN host Dwayne Russell wants the AFL to bring back Heritage Round.
His call came after Geelong announced they’d be wearing a special edition retro guernsey at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night against the Western Bulldogs.
The guernsey the Cats will wear pays homage to the 1924 strip worn by the club 100 years ago and recognises club great Edward ‘Carji’ Greeves who won the first-ever Brownlow Medal that season.
All clubs wore retro and throwback guernseys across Heritage Round between 2003 and 2007, and Russell would love to see it reintroduced in 2025 and beyond.
Russell believes the AFL could bring the concept back as ‘Retro Round’ with other concepts brought in to recognise the history of the game.
“This weekend Geelong has got a 1924 rewind guernsey which will be worn Saturday night (against the Bulldogs),” Russell said on SEN Afternoons.
“Should the AFL just have a retro round? I think the AFL misses out every year on a retro round.
“I know we've talked about it before but surely there needs to be more people talking it up. I think it's our duty to talk it into existence.
“Should we have a retro round? Should the AFL get on board? I love the look of Geelong's 1924 hooped jumper. It looks fantastic and I think everyone would get into it.
“I think fans would absolutely love it. I think fans would dress for the retro round. Bring it back, AFL.
“What are you waiting for? You do so much other stuff when it comes to different forms of promotions for footy and for rounds.
“This would be the perfect promotion, I reckon, for a retro round.”
The last Heritage Round occurred in Round 14, 2007.
Check out the heritage guernseys worn by all Victorian clubs (except for St Kilda) in 2003.
