“We lacked composure”: Voss admits consistency issue after another second-half fadeout

Michael Voss is confident that Carlton can turn the ship around on its season while noting there are consistent issues they need to work on.

The Blues led for the majority of the game (108 minutes to be exact) against the Western Bulldogs last night but conceded three of the last four goals to fall short by 8 points at Marvel Stadium.

Speaking in the post-game press conference, Voss believed that Carlton lacked composure, particularly within the fourth quarter.

“I felt that we lacked composure,” Voss admitted.

“Our best has been pretty good, but we just seem to be straying from us more than we would like.”

In all of Carlton's games this season, they have led going in to half time only to go on to lose the match.

Within these three games, Carlton only managed to score 67 points in the second half compared to their opponents who combined scored 156 points.

While Voss said after last week’s loss against Hawthorn that Carlton have “run out games pretty well”, after last night’s performance, he admits work needs to be done to ensure they can maintain their leads to the end of the game.

“Yeah, that’s fair,” Voss said.

“So, we've got to find a way through that.

“We’ll go back have a look at it, some people will say it was how you are running out games.

“Well, maybe that’s part of it.

“I think we should factor that in, because if we probably had some better moments there to be able to control the ball; we would sort of probably found ourselves on a different side of the ledger.”

On the positive side, Voss was happy with the performance of his players citing Jacob Weitering’s efforts on Sam Darcy.

“There’s a lot of parts that are going well, there’s individuals who are going very well,” he said.

“I would say even Jacob with the role he had on Darcy.

“He persisted at that, but good players keep showing up which is what he did which is a credit to him as a young man.

“But as we know it takes a squad and it takes a team to get the job done and we need to do it more often.”

On Finey’s Final Siren, Mark Finey raised concerns around Sam Docherty’s performance who managed 15 disposals for the match.

“There must be concerns for the playing future of Sam Docherty,” Fine explained.

“He just doesn’t have depth in his kicking anymore, he should have snapped a goal in the third quarter that would have been all-important; he couldn’t make the distance."

With the Blues now being 0-3, this will set up a huge Thursday night clash against the old enemy Collingwood at the MCG.

Carlton will be hopeful to avoid being 0-4 for the first since 2019 while Collingwood hopes to solidify their place in the top eight.
