Round 17 of the 2024 VFL season is complete with two games taking place on Sunday.
The day’s first game occurred between traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton at Ikon Park, with the Blues prevailing 50-133.
Jason Binns had an utterly dominant game in Navy Blue, kicking three goals to go with a whopping 47 touches as he looks to push for a senior recall.
He was well supported by Ashton Moir (two goals), Brody Kemp (19 disposals) and Marc Pittonet (17 disposals, 25 hitouts) as other senior-listed players pushing for AFL spots.
For the Magpies, Mason Cox played his first game since injuring his knee in Round 11 of the AFL season against Fremantle. The American finished with 23 hitouts, four marks and 11 disposals but didn’t hit the scoreboard. Jack Bytel (31 disposals) also kept up his prolific form.
Sunday’s other game took place at Piranha Park with Coburg kicking six goals to one in the final term to come from behind and beat Port Melbourne 75-70.
Perhaps the most interesting performance from the round was from potential No. 1 pick Jagga Smith who suited up for Richmond in their 58-36 loss to Fremantle.
The Oakleigh Chargers on-baller fitted in seamlessly at the VFL level, racking up footy at will with 31 classy disposals to lead all-comers, he also had eight clearances,
Other standout performers across the round from AFL clubs included Nick Haynes who had 28 disposals in GWS’ win over Gold Coast. First-year forward Phoenix Gothard also hit the scoreboard with four majors in the 78-51 win.
Logan Morris (four goals, 22 disposals) was big in Brisbane’s win over Sydney, Kynan Brown had a ridiculous 24 tackles to go with 27 disposals and a goal in Casey’s loss to Frankston and Tanner Bruhn had 35 disposals to go with a goal and 10 clearances in his return from injury for the Cats in their 57-57 draw with Footscray.
