“The season is over”: Cornes and Lloyd bury Collingwood after shocking Hawthorn loss

Collingwood’s quest to win back-to-back premierships died on Saturday according to Kane Cornes and Matthew Lloyd as the Pies went down 133-67 to the Hawks at the MCG.

While the Pies are still technically alive in the finals race with a record of 8-2-8, the duo have seen enough as Collingwood has dropped four consecutive games with Saturday easily being their worst and the biggest defeat in Craig McRae’s tenure as coach.

The Hawks utterly dominated Collingwood in every sense, having 434 disposals to 288 and 69 inside 50s to 37 and Cornes said that the Hawks outworked, outmuscled and outfoxed the Pies to end their season.

He also thinks that Collingwood simply wasn’t tough enough in trying conditions and was bitterly disappointed by the below-par display dished up against a rampaging Hawks side that’s now won nine of their past 11 as they charge to an unlikely September berth.

“They were outworked, outmuscled, Collingwood looked old, and I thought they were outfoxed in the coaches' box,” Cornes said on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“They’re out of luck, and the season is over.

“Here’s why, because Hawthorn were +37 in ground balls, this is why I’ve got a lot of confidence that if they are to qualify for finals they will equip themselves very well.

“Like Jeremy Howe … who were you complaining about there (when Ginnivan took an inside 50 mark), you were standing five metres behind your opponent.

“Hawthorn were too tough, no one could tackle Will Day and I reckon they broke 30 tackles for the day.

“They were just far too tough, and Collingwood’s season is over.”

Lloyd also called out Collingwood’s desperation and lack of pressure, which were hallmarks of their game in 2022 and 2023 as they finished third and premiers respectively.

“They are poor defensively,” Lloyd said.

“How desperate are they? Hawthorn were amazing, but Collingwood just aren’t as hungry as they need to be.

“We’ve shown their defence for the last five weeks … you can lose, but they’re losing badly now.

“I think that the manic pressure (that they had has gone) … it’s just constant … there’s no point of difference for them and I’ve seen that for a while.”

The Pies will be desperate to pick up a win next Sunday when they face Richmond at the MCG, while Hawthorn travel to Adelaide to face the Crows on the same day.
