Randwick: Race 8, No. 1 - Vivy Air
She clearly should have won first-up last preparation when in plenty of traffic before getting clear and hitting the line in the best last 200m of the meeting. She was tried in black-type company subsequently and wasn’t far away. She’s been trialling well and has switched stables, now in the care of Ciaron Maher. Mark Zahra comes to Randwick for one ride and she looks well placed in this grade despite giving weight to the boys.
Randwick: Race 9, No. 3 - Etna Rosso
He won well when well supported in midweek grade prior to the break. He returns here from 143-days between runs and has been gelded. Last preparation he returned on the back of one jumpout over an unsuitable trip but this time around, he returns to the track with two trials under his belt over a distance that is within his wheelhouse fresh. He gets the claim from the low draw and has a potential class edge on his rivals.
Doomben Race 5 #1 Irish Songs
I thought he could win the Glasshouse the day the meeting was postponed, he then had to wait a week, would have missed gallops and bumped into Punch Lane the second time around, but I thought he went well without a whole lot of luck. He’s coming back out of Listed races during the carnival to an off-season Open Handicap without a whole lot of depth. A race like this is well within reach for the rising 9YO.
__Doomben Race 6 #1 Sneak Preview __
Another horse I tipped last start who I think can be in the finish again. He ran fifth in the Rocky Cup a fortnight ago and just didn’t have clear galloping room at a crucial stage of the race. He got on heels and ran fifth. Now out to 2000m, drawn a bit wider and getting Ryan Maloney who is fresh off a four-timer at Ipswich on Wednesday, he can get back in the winner’s circle.
Randwick Race 8 #5 Kandinsky Abstract
He was an expensive yearling who has no doubt been underwhelming for connections, but he resumes as a gelding. He lost the rider in his second trial, but I thought his first hit out was good. He gets a nice draw and gets Tommy Berry in the saddle. If the gelding operation does the trick, we could finally see the best of this horse and this is the right race for him to show us something.
Randwick Race 9 #9 King Of Florida
He was nine months between runs in his first Australian start which was a complete forgive. He was specked at double figures, but he was caught four wide without cover for most of the race under 60.5kg on a Heavy 8, which just isn’t his go based on his European form - two wins on a good & synthetic track. That’s been a hot form race too, with three subsequent winners coming out of the race. He’s been back to the trials, trialled well on Tuesday and now draws the inside alley under Jay Ford, steps up to 1800m and gets a Good 4 surface.
