The certainties for every remaining Round 23 game

Back for another week, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the eight remaining games in Round 23 across Saturday and Sunday.

Gold Coast versus Melbourne

Gawn 15+ disposals, 25+ hitouts

Melbourne captain Max Gawn is in brilliant touch despite his side’s overall dipping form.

The star ruckman has averaged 22.5 disposals, 37 hitouts, four clearances and six marks across the last fortnight and will hope to continue that against the Suns.

Gawn picked up 15 disposals to go with two goals and 17 hitouts last time against Gold Coast, albeit that was playing in a dual-ruck role with Brodie Grundy.

Expect those numbers to improve in this one as the sole option.

Lachlan Geleit

GWS versus Fremantle

Hogan 2+ goals

Jesse Hogan has a golden opportunity to extend his Coleman lead in this one with second-placed Charlie Curnow missing Round 23 with injury.

As things stand, Hogan has kicked 61 goals to Curnow’s 57, if he can kick a couple in this game, his lead could be insurmountable even if the star Blue returns next week.

The 29-year-old has kicked multiple goals in all of his last seven games for a total of 27 majors across that period.

He should kick a couple against his former club on Saturday.

Lachlan Geleit

Collingwood versus Brisbane

Daniher to kick 2+ goals

Joe Daniher has been in a rich vein of form for the Lions.

He has kicked 13.10 in his last five and has kicked 45.40 for the campaign so far.

Daniher has booted multiple goals in 11 of his last 12 games and is getting plenty of opportunities.

In Lions colours Daniher has kicked 19.9 in even games against the Pies, including three in last year’s Grand Final.

He should be amongst it again on Saturday.

Andrew Slevison

Port Adelaide versus Adelaide

Butters 25+ disposals

Zak Butters has been an absolute force in the midfield for the Power this season and he rises to another level when the big games come around.

Butters has recorded 25+ disposals in 13 of Port Adelaide’s last 15 home games, while he's also averaging a career-high 28 disposals this season.

In this last Showdown, Butters recorded 33 disposals, and in one of 2023's Showdowns, Butters collected 32 disposals.

It would be a surprise if the Crows could limit Butters to less than 25 this weekend.

Noah Desta

St Kilda versus Geelong

Atkins 15+ disposals

Tom Atkins has collected 15+ disposals in 11 of his last 12 appearances.

With Cam Guthrie, Brandan Parfitt, and now Tanner Bruhn - who entered the AFL's concussion protocols last weekend - on the sidelines, Atkins should fire in the midfield.

The tough Cat is averaging 17.1 disposals this season and also recorded 21 disposals in their win against St Kilda in Round 1.

Expect him to record 15 disposals this weekend against St Kilda.

Noah Desta

Western Bulldogs versus North Melbourne

Xerri 15+ disposals

Coming off a stellar 30-disposal performance last week, the Roos’ star should be easing past 15 disposals.

Xerri recorded 20 disposals in his last encounter against the Dogs in Round 16 and hasn’t dropped below the 15 disposal mark since Round 9 this season.

With Tim English out, Xerri is likely to be among the action again on Sunday.

Tom Williams

Hawthorn versus Richmond

Moore 15+ disposals and 1+ goals

The Hawthorn gun has been impressive this season averaging 20.1 disposals and 1.4 goals per game.

Moore is coming off another brilliant match last week against the Blues recording 29 disposals.

As the All-Australian contender has scored a goal in three of his last five matches, we should be able to pencil him in for a goal this week as the Hawks will look to pile on a percentage-boosting win against the 18th-placed Tigers

Tom Williams

West Coast versus Carlton

Newman 20+ disposals

With the absence of injured duo Adam Saad and Jordan Boyd for this week’s clash with the Eagles, Newman should be given more kick-in duties in Perth.

The defender has played on from the square for 98 per cent of his kick-ins this season, and with Boyd and Saad out, the classy defender won’t have to share the load very often.

Averaging 23 disposals per game this year, the 31-year-old should cruise past the 20 mark at Optus Stadium.
