Tom Morris thinks Melbourne should get creative to try and lure Gold Coast star Mac Andrew to the club after the 2025 season.
Morris reported on Monday that one Victorian club has told Andrew’s manager that they are prepared to offer the 20-year-old $1.5 million a year over eight seasons to get him to their club.
Andrew comes out of contract with Gold Coast at the end of next season and Morris expects a raft of Victorian clubs to come with big offers to the impressive defender.
Morris thinks that the Demons should be one of those clubs after they were unable to select Andrew in the 2021 Draft despite the Dandenong Stingrays product being a member of their Next Generation Academy at the time due to draft rules.
In order to lure Andrew back to the club, Morris believes that the Demons should list his younger brother Riak as a Category B rookie to make the club a more enticing place to be for the Sun.
As Riak Andrew is a member of the club’s NGA, the Demons can list him as a Category B rookie if he’s not drafted in the National Draft.
Morris doesn’t think that Riak would be clogging a spot on the list either way with the 19-year-old showing some signs playing for the Stingrays, Vic Country and Berwick in the Eastern Football League this season.
“This is my opinion and what I think Melbourne should do for Mac Andrew,” Morris said on SEN Whateley.
“Remember Mac Andrew was in their NGA, and that’s a sore spot for Melbourne supporters because they missed out on him because of the rules at the time.
“They should do what clubs have done for other players and bring his brother in as a Category B rookie.
“He can actually play … he’s 19 years old … bring him in. That would make the Demons a more attractive proposition for Mac Andrew to go to at the end of next year.
“His brother is not just there just to fill a spot. He can actually play … and he'd be Category B because he is in the NGA.
“So, there is a way that the Demons can get him.”
While Morris thinks that the Demons should go after Andrew, he named some other Melbourne-based clubs that he expects to throw their hat in the ring as well.
“I'm sure the Saints would look at him,” Morris said.
“I'm sure North, Hawthorn, Essendon and all of these clubs would look at him as well.
“It's just a matter of what he wants to do and how much Gold Coast are willing to pay (to keep him).
“But the money is unbelievable.”
Given Andrew’s contract status, any move for the emerging defender would need to come in the 2025 off-season.
