Josh Jenkins has outlined Richmond’s biggest hits and misses from the last five years of drafting and recruiting players.

The former Adelaide Crows forward will assess each of the 18 clubs on AFL Trade Radio and provide what he believes have been the hits and misses when it comes to player acquisition over the last half decade.

Richmond hits

“This was a difficult part and speaks to what Richmond has done in the past five years and why they’re in the situation they’re in,” Jenkins said on The Late Trade.

Tom Brown at Pick 17 (in 2021) and Kane McAuliffe at Pick 40 (in 2023). I think both those guys have shown that, particularly in an era where you want as many good kicks as possible, they can do something for you.

“They’re the big hits.”

Richmond misses

“The big miss, at this stage, has to be Jacob Hopper,” Jenkins added.

“28 games through his two seasons at the footy club. So he’s missed about a third of the games that he’s been at the club for.

“They would have traded for a player who at GWS was a breakaway midfielder who would get the footy and run away from contest, running bounces, maybe hit the scoreboard a little bit.

“Taranto is the grunt player and he’s lived up to that as far as I’m concerned. He has impacted.

“At this stage, through injury and form, Jacob Hopper is their big miss.”
