Josh Jenkins has outlined North Melbourne’s biggest hits and misses from the last five years of drafting and recruiting players.
The former Adelaide Crows forward will assess each of the 18 clubs on AFL Trade Radio and provide what he believes have been the hits and misses when it comes to player acquisition over the last half decade.
Read his thoughts on the Roos below:
“In terms of the big hits, they’ve nailed their early picks,” Jenkins said on The Late Trade.
“Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw, even Jason Horne-Francis - I know it didn't work out for them, but they know he was the obvious clear-cut number one - you had to pick him.
“It's a shame it didn't work out for them (with Horne-Francis), but they were able to turn that around and ensure they got some good players.
“So, they're hitting on their early picks, which hasn't always been the case for them.”
“Their big miss to me has been their trades,” Jenkins added.
“It's their trading has been a bit of a slippery slope to the scrap yard for them.
They've got players, who they haven't given up the world for, but when you trade for someone, you've got to give something up.
“It'd be different if these guys like Jaidyn Stephenson, Aiden Bonar and Callum Coleman-Jones had all been free agents because then you're just saying, ‘Well, you've given up salary, it hasn't worked out necessarily, but no harm done’.
“But they've given up picks to get these guys in. You might say they haven't been high-end picks, but they’re still picks that you could use on young players.
“My tagline for them is, and it might be a little bit harsh, but it's reality.
“Window shopping is okay when you can't afford the real thing, and that is in reference to trading.
“If you can't go and get the best, then maybe just sit this one out.”
