Who can make sense of the AFL’s free agency compensation?
The formula continues to confuse all of us apart from those at AFL House making the decisions.
In a bid to make some sense of the system, V/AFL great Garry Lyon has undertaken the task of providing a draft pick which he believes would suffice for 18 players that Tom Morris chose at random.
These are Lyon's snap thoughts on what he thinks a player would be worth on the proviso that they have become a free agent. The method is based on feel rather than the secret herbs and spices currently used by the AFL.
The thoughts, voiced on SEN Breakfast, are completely unbiased (apart from Clayton Oliver’s hypothetical compensation).
Warning: Take this with a grain of salt. They are simply Garry’s on-the-spot reactions.
Rory Laird (Adelaide) - Pick 26.
Cam Rayner (Brisbane) - Pick 18.
Harry McKay (Carlton) - Pick 9.
Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood) - Pick 12 (because they’d value him as a coach as well so you’d get a player and a coach).
Sam Draper (Essendon) - Pick 37.
Sean Darcy (Fremantle) - Pick 15.
Sam De Koning (Geelong) - Pick 19.
Jed Walter (Gold Coast) - Pick 10.
Jesse Hogan (GWS) - Pick 2.
Clayton Oliver (Melbourne) - Pick 1 (Melbourne supporter tongue in cheek).
Zac Fisher (North Melbourne) - Pick 60.
Jack Ginnivan (Hawthorn) - Pick 27.
Esava Ratugolea (Port Adelaide) - Pick 38.
Tom Lynch (Richmond) - Pick 33.
Jack Steele (St Kilda) - Pick 30.
Tom McCartin (Sydney) - Pick 15.
Oscar Allen (West Coast) - Pick 8.
Rory Lobb (Western Bulldogs) - Pick 25.
