Carlton will consider listing former Collingwood second-round pick Liam McMahon in the rookie draft, according to Josh Gabelich.
The 22-year-old was selected with Pick 31 in the 2020 National Draft by the Magpies, but was delisted and his since represented the Blues’ VFL side.
He had an outstanding 2024 season, kicking 45 goals from 16 games for Carlton’s reserves.
AFL Media's Gabelich believes he is a strong chance to return to an AFL list in 2025.
“We have to get through tomorrow night first (trade deadline), but then attention will turn to the draft and this is a name that is familiar to Collingwood supporters, his name is Liam McMahon,” Gabelich told SEN Mornings.
“Carlton are considering him in the rookie draft and if not they will invite him to do a pre-season with them and potentially pick him up as a supplemental selection period pick-up.
“I’m surprised more clubs aren’t looking at this guy. He’s just 22, he’s 198cm and key forwards are hard to find, especially ones like this, these money-ball picks.
“I think we’ll see him back on an AFL list by the early stages of next year. The SSP has been fruitful for a lot of clubs. Look at Anthony Caminiti and what he’s done at the Saints.
“It’s one to keep an eye on. Clubs will start reporting back midway through November and the invites go out later that month. Liam McMahon is one and he deserves another opportunity.”
Carlton has been searching for key forward depth, with no real personnel behind Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow on their list. Especially with Jack Silvagni missing the season with a torn ACL.
They at stages used Lewis Young and Brodie Kemp as a key forwards while their stars were injured in 2024.
