Why Glen Boss says punters should be wary when backing Pride Of Jenni in the Cox Plate

The 2024 Cox Plate is shaping up to be one of the races of the spring.

Widely considered the greatest weight-for-age race in the world, this year's Ladbrokes Cox Plate will see some of the best middle-distance horses from around the world ascend on Moonee Valley on October 26.

When comparing previous Cox Plates, champion jockey Glen Boss is always a great point of reference given his history in the race being a four-time winner.

Boss is expecting this year’s 2040m Group 1 to be an epic with Pride Of Jenni striding out the front like the great Vo Rogue.

“This is going to be one for the ages,” Boss told SENTrack.

“Winx winning her fourth was one of those days where you had to be there. I think this is going to be one of those days.

“When you look at Pride Of Jenni, when she’s on and over that distance, man, she’s hard to beat.

“She’s got an aerobic capacity that takes you back to the Vo Rogue days, but I think she’s better than Vo Rogue.

“For a mare to be able to sustain a gallop at such high speeds and not really stop at the end of the race.”

However, Boss has urged punters to be wary of Pride Of Jenni’s racing style, particularly in a high-pressure race like the Cox Plate.

He doesn’t believe she will be given any favours in a star-studded field.

“The race setup for the Cox Plate will be so different to anything she’s been in, it’s going to be higher pressure,” he continued.

“I know she won at The Valley in a small field (in the Feehan), but this is a bit of a setup because it becomes a sprint to the first turn. The race setup for her is going to be so different, she’s not going to be able to amble across and then find the lead.

“I’d be wary with her. She’s not the quickest in her first quarter, it’s her second quarter where she breaks them up, and the quarter after that. That’s where she wins all of her races.

“She won’t have that opportunity in the Cox Plate to amble across and have the first quarter (her way).”

Boss concluded: “Then you’ve got Via Sistina who has reclaimed the crown.

“She’s been the one that I’ve wanted to be on all the time.

“Wow, this is going to be one hell of a race. It’s going to be a spectacle.”

The Cox Plate will be run at The Valley on Saturday, October 26.

Japanese raider Prognosis is the current $4 favourite with Sportsbet ahead of Via Sistina ($4.50), Pride Of Jenni ($4.80), Broadsiding ($5.50) and Mr Brightside ($8).
