Esteemed racing broadcaster Jason Richardson has provided his tips for the 2024 Cox Plate.
The Group 1 weight-for-age classic over 2040m takes place at Moonee Valley this Saturday and once again a crack field has been assembled.
Channel 7’s ‘Richo’ is generally a big fan of overseas form and that is the case with his tips for this edition of the Cox Plate with Japanese raider Prognosis on top.
“The best 2000m horses in Australasia want to win this race,” Richardson said on SEN Breakfast.
“It’s so unique and this year it’s going to be an absolute cracker.
“There’s so many questions about it but I think your starting point has to be this Japanese horse in Prognosis.
“If he turns up in the form that he was in Hong Kong in April then he’ll be the horse to beat.”
Prognosis, to be ridden by Daman Lane from barrier 5, is currently the $3.30 favourite with Sportsbet for the Cox Plate.
Richo also likes UK galloper Docklands as his value bet in the race.
“You’ve got to have something each-way on Docklands,” he added.
“When you have a look at the Juddmonte - one of the best races in the world - he blew the start by five lengths and ran really well behind probably the best horse in the world in City Of Troy.
“He draws barrier 1 and you can get around $17-18. Have something little each-way on Docklands in the Cox Plate.
“I’ve given you an English tip and a Japanese tip and I feel like I’m disrespecting the Aussies.”
Docklands, trained by Harry Eustace, will jump from barrier 1 and is currently $18 for in-form jockey Blake Shinn.
