The draft hopeful who grew up a “mad Essendon supporter” and idolises Merrett and Bontempelli

Greater Western Victoria midfielder Jack Ough has had a terrific season in the Coates Talent League and has impressed scouts with his inside and outside skills, balancing his time on the ball and on the wing.

The versatile midfielder also represented Vic Country, featuring in all four national carnival games.

As is the case with all draftees, the wider footy public wants to know what type of players these budding young guns are.

“I’m a tall midfielder at around 194cm, I started on the wing in the first half of the year, then moved more inside in the back-end of the year, so I’ve got that inside and outside balance, and I’m versatile as well,” Ough said on SEN Afternoons.

Ough says he has been inspired by Zach Merrett, the captain of the club he supports, as well as Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli.

“I grew up a mad Essendon supporter, so I’ve loved Zach Merrett and the way he goes about it,” he added.

“The last couple of years I’ve loved Bontempelli as well, that sort of tall midfielder, and I really look up to his leadership as well.”

Ough was then asked if he could pick one club to be drafted to, who would it be and why?

“I would probably go Essendon. I’ve watched every game growing up, but obviously happy to go anywhere.”

The hypothetical was then posed: Let’s say the Bombers did not select him in late November, how would he feel lining up against his childhood hero Merrett?

“I probably wouldn’t believe it to be honest,” Ough said of that potential scenario.

“It’s now getting closer but I haven’t even realised that it could be a reality, but I’m super excited for what will come hopefully.”

Ough’s aunty is Hannah Priest, St Kilda’s AFLW captain, and he was asked about the influence she has had on his career to date.

“She’s been incredible, obviously it’s been so cool to see what she’s done coming into football late,” he said of the 32-year-old.

“You hear about her character around the club and I look up to and take inspiration from her in terms of her leadership as well.”

Ough is one of many draft prospects in the country who are looking to fulfil a lifelong dream by hearing their name called out in this year’s AFL Draft.
