North Melbourne recruiting boss Will Thursfield says the Roos are open to trading pick 2 if the right pick swap comes their way on draft night.
Thursfield’s comments, which came on AFL.com.au’s Gettable, were prefaced by the club’s position that they’re happy to sit at No. 2 and take the best player available if the right offer doesn’t come their way.
In response to that statement, SEN Breakfast duo Sam Edmund and Cam Mooney discussed if they’d give up the prized selection if two later picks inside the top 10 came back their way.
Edmund thinks it’s all dependent on who the Roos have their eyes on, while Mooney is an advocate for bringing in as many elite youngsters as you can provided that there’s not a clear standout at the top selection.
Mooney: “Would you give up pick 2 for picks 9 and 10?”
Edmund: “It's a really hard question to answer – and I always say this - because we don't know how North Melbourne views the draft.
“If they think the player that they really love is still going to be there at pick 9 or pick 10, then possibly.
“But if they don't or they can't guarantee it, then maybe you stick with 2 – they’ve got that pick then nothing else (until pick 62), so maybe it's in their best interest to maximise it.
“The other thing is, do they think they've got enough kids in already? It's really hard to go inside the minds of people at North Melbourne.”
Mooney: “I’ve always been someone that thinks the more draft picks at the top you can get, you take.
“If you have pick 1 and you can get picks 4 and 5 for it, you take that, unless it's a Harley Reid or someone like that.
“With pick 2, if I'm getting picks anywhere between 8 and 10 and it’s two of them (I would do it).
“When you're a young list, get more young talent through the door and as much young talent through the door as you possibly can.”
The first round of the 2024 AFL Draft will be read out on Wednesday night at Marvel Stadium. The remaining picks will be made on Thursday.
