Richmond will take GWV Rebels midfielder Sam Lalor with pick 1 in the 2024 AFL Draft according to AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.
Twomey says that the Tigers had narrowed their choice down to two with their first selection, with Lalor beating out Oakleigh Chargers on-baller Finn O’Sullivan to be the first name read out on Wednesday night.
The powerful midfielder is considered a game-breaking prospect, and he’s set to arrive at Tigerland at a good time following the departures of Shai Bolton, Daniel Rioli, Liam Baker, Jack Graham and the retired Dustin Martin, who Lalor has been likened to.
“The call has come down to Finn O’Sullivan and Sam Lalor, but Sam Lalor will be a Tiger, he’s going to be the number one pick,” Twomey told AFL.com.au’s Gettable.
“It’s an exciting moment for him coming up on Wednesday night, I believe that’s the way it will head.
“They get their game-breaker, there’s a number of players at the top of the draft board that they’ve considered in an even pool.
“They lose a couple of game-breakers coming out of their club this year.
“But Sam Lalor will be the long-term guy to be that prospect.”
Richmond takes picks 1, 6, 10, 11, 18, 20, 23 and 24 into the draft.
The first round will be read out on Wednesday night at Marvel Stadium. The rest of the picks will be selected on Thursday.
