The Melbourne Renegades are champions of the WBBL after defeating the Brisbane Heat in an action-packed final at the MCG.
The Heat won the toss, sending the Renegades into bat, and struck with three early wickets in the first five overs, including two in two balls after the most extraordinary run out you may ever see.
West Indian Deandra Dottin was casually jogging through for a single when her bat got stuck in the ground just short of the crease line as the keeper knocked the bails off and, after a delayed appeal was given out on review for a Diamond Duck, bringing the score to 3/23.
Hayley Matthews and Georgia Wareham steadied the Renegades, putting on a 41-run partnership before Wareham's dismissal.
But it was the Matthews show at the MCG who scored 69 off 61 balls, breaking the record for the highest individual score in a BBL decider.
Charli Knott led the way for the Heat bowlers with 3/28, with the Renegades posting a score of 9/141.
It was a shaky start for the Heat in the second innings, losing Grace Harris and Jemimah Rodrigues, falling to 2/19 before coming off for rain in the third over.
The rain caused a 30-minute break in play, resulting in a revised target of 98 for the Heat to chase in 12 overs.
Things went from bad to worse for the Heat as they fell to 5/37 losing Charli Knott and Laura Harris in consecutive balls off the bowling of Matthews.
Requiring 43 runs from the final three overs, the Heat took the Power Surge, and Jess Jonassen hit 13 runs off the first four balls of the over, making the total not insurmountable.
11 runs off the second last over meant that 19 runs were required off the last over for the Heat to win their third WBBL title.
But it was a bridge too far for the Heat; after some brilliant pressure bowling from Renegades captain Sophie Molineux, the Renegades had done it.
This culminates an unbelievable turnaround from the Renegades, who finished bottom of the ladder last season, to now holding up the WBBL trophy.
Hayley Matthews was awarded player of the match for her record breaking 69 runs to go along with her two wickets.
Heat captain Jess Jonassen scored 44* off 28 balls, but it wasn’t enough to stop back-to-back grand final losses for the Heat.
