The much-anticipated 14th edition of the Big Bash League is right around the corner.
Will the Heat go back-to-back, could the Sixers get their redemption, will the Scorchers add to their trophy case, can the strikers get it right, could the Hurricanes win their first, can the Stars finally break the curse, could the Renegades win in their new era and can the Thunder go from last to first?
All of these questions will be answered this season:
Brisbane Heat
Ins: Tom Alsop (England), Callum Vidler
Outs: Josh Brown (Renegades), Sam Billings (thunder)
Last year's BBL champions have had a few major changes to their squad as they look to defend their title. The appointment of new coach Johan Botha after title-winning coach Wade Seccombe didn’t seek an extension will add a new challenge for the Heat. The losses of power hitter Josh Brown and Sam Billings will leave a few holes in the batting lineup. However, the re-signings of Kiwi Colin Munro and the inclusion of Englishman Tom Alsop will provide some stability in their lineup. Much like their title-winning documentary “Reignite”, the Heat will look to reignite their title defence to march towards their 3rd BBL title.
Sydney Sixers
Ins: Akeal Hosein (Renegades), Jafer Chohan (England), Ben Manenti (Strikers)
Outs: Steve O’Keefe (retired), Tom Curran (Stars)
Last year's runners-up are ready to go again to go one better this campaign, having secured their stars for BBL14. The loss of star opening bowler Tom Curran will hurt the Sixers, but the inclusion of Akeal Hosein, a star West Indian T20 bowler, will look to fill that void. The retirement of veteran Steve O’Keefe will leave a large responsibility on Todd Murphy to spin the Sixers to victory. With a team that boasts Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshius, Josh Philippe and James Vince, the Sixers will be contending for the title.
Perth Scorchers
Ins: Finn Allen (New Zealand), Matthew Hurst (England), Keaton Jennings (England), Matthew Spoors, Mahil Beardman
Outs: Laurie Evans (Renegades), Hamish McKenzie (Stars)
The BBL’s most successful club look set to be a major force to contend with in BBL14. The inclusion of big-hitting Kiwi opener Finn Allen will bring strength to the top of the order. Having lost Laurie Evans to the Renegades due to a salary cap squeeze the Scorchers were able to pick up opener batter Keaton Jennings and wicketkeeper-bat Matthew Hurst to add to their depth. Having lost their captain, Ashton Turner, to an injury for the BBL13 campaign, the return of their skipper will have the Scorchers firing to win it all.
Adelaide Strikers
Ins: Ollie Pope (England), Fabian Allen (West Indies), Alex Ross (Thunder), Jordan Buckingham
Outs: Wes Agar (Thunder), Ben Manenti (Sixers)
The Strikers will once again be competitive in BBL|14 after losing in the semi-final last campaign to the eventual champions. The Strikers hold some of the strongest batting in the competition, boasting the likes of Chris Lynn, Matt Short and D’Arcy Short. They also hold the rights to test players Alex Carey and Travis Head. The acquisition of England vice-captain Ollie Pope will add to the batting prowess of the Strikers. Having only won one BBL title is this the year they add to that tally?
Hobart Hurricanes
Ins: Shai Hope (West Indies), Rishad Hossain (Bangladesh), Charlier Wakim, Jake Doran
Outs: N/A
As one of the two teams without a BBL title, the Hurricanes are looking to change their fortunes after two seasons of missing finals. They have maintained their list from BBL|13 along with some handy ins, namely with West Indian star Shai Hope. Rishad Hossain from Bangladesh will also provide greater spinning options for the Hurricanes alongside cult figure Peter Hatzoglou. The re-signing of English allrounder Chris Jordan will provide the star power needed for the Hurricanes to contend.
Melbourne Stars
Ins: Peter Siddle (Renegades), Ben Duckett (England), Tom Curran (Sixers), Hamish McKenzie (Scorchers), Joe Clarke (Renegades), Doug Warren
Outs: Nick Larkin (retired)
The Stars have gone all in on their recruitment for BBL|14 signing numerous experienced internationals. Securing the signatures of England opener Ben Duckett and fast bowler Tom Curran will get Stars fans very excited. The signing of veteran Peter Siddle will also add to the fast-bowling depth. Under the new captaincy of Marcus Stoinis after Glenn Maxwell stepped aside the Stars will be competitive once again. With so many oh so nears for the Stars, is this the year they finally claim that elusive BBL title?
Melbourne Renegades
Ins: Josh Brown (Heat), Jacob Bethell (England), Tim Seifert (New Zealand), Laurie Evans (Scorchers), Gurinder Sandhu (Thunder)
Outs: Aaron Finch (retired), Shaun Marsh (retired), Nic Maddison (Thunder), Akeal Hosein (Sixers)
It’s a new era for the Melbourne Renegades after the retirements of club stalwarts Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh. The appointment of Cameron White as head coach means the former Renegade and Australian international will lead a new era for the Renegades. The Gades have no shortage of top-end talent, having the likes of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Will Sutherland. The additions of Josh Brown and Kiwi wicketkeeper Tim Seifert will bring more talent to the lineup. After only making the finals once in the past five seasons, is this the year the Renegades make the jump to contenders?
Sydney Thunder
Ins: Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand), Sam Billings (Heat), Sherfane Rutherford (West Indies), Wes Agar (Strikers), Nic Maddison (Renegades)
Outs: Alex Ross (Strikers), Gurinder Sandhu (Renegades)
After only winning a single game last campaign there is plenty of room for improvement for the Thunder. The signing of English wicket-keeper batsman Sam Billings from the Heat will certainly help their case. The acquisitions of Wes Agar to go along with Lockie Ferguson and Nic Maddison provide a new look for the Thunder. Newly appointed captain David Warner will lead at the top of the order alongside rising star Sam Konstas. It’s a fresh look for the Thunder, and the only direction is up.
BBL|14 commences on the 15th of December with the Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Stars at Optus Stadium.
